March 15, 2026 - The day of the Moonlight Beach 10K. Fully outfitted, race buddies at my side, we ran a great race. After the race, I would start to slowly unravel and come undone.
The Calm Before The Storm.
The Walkabout.
March 16, 2026 - The day of “The Walkabout.” I walked twelve miles up and down the streets of Solana Beach. I took over 1000 pictures and videos. With only one pancake down the hatch post-race, followed by a small dinner the night before, I was weak, tired, and dehydrated. Still, I pushed ahead, full force - rooted in a higher purpose, driven by what I thought was complete clarity - Flowing.
The Echo Chamber
An echo chamber is an environment where you only encounter information, opinions, and beliefs that reinforce your own. In these closed systems, dissenting voices are typically ignored, mocked, or excluded, causing your own ideas to simply "echo" back to you.
How Does It Work?
Confirmation Bias: People naturally gravitate toward information that validates what they already believe.
The “Bounce” Effect: Much like a physical room with sound-reflecting walls, repeating the same ideas within a group amplifies them, making them seem universally accepted.
Social Media & Algorithms
While these environments existed long before the internet, they are heavily fueled by modern tech:
Heightened Polarization: It deepens divides between groups and makes mutual understanding difficult.
Spread of Misinformation: Without fact-checking or debate, false claims can circulate rapidly as absolute facts.
Loss of Objectivity: It distorts your perception of reality, tricking you into believing everyone sees the world exactly as you do.
That weekend, my algorithm told me exactly what I wanted to hear, exacerbating my already weak and fragile state.
My Reality.
